Farewell to the Giants – Day 5

Memories of August 1914, Royal de Luxe Giants in Liverpool

All good things must come to and end and after 5 days, and 30 plus miles, the giants left the city for new adventures.  That wasn’t before they waved off with a fitting finale that included the Liverpool Pals, a pipe band, cannons blasting leaflets into the crowd, tugs and barges and enough dry ice to sink the Titanic!  And once again Liverpool turned out en masse to wave goodbye.  I saw it when the giant spider La Princesse arrived in 2008 and again when the giants made their first visit in 2012, but once again, in 2014 I was left speechless by the huge crowds who turned out to see Royal de Luxe say goodbye.  It doesn’t seem to be an exaggeration when I say I can’t imagine any other city doing big events that involve the whole community quite the way Liverpool does.  The only thing left to say is ‘hurry back’!
