Ai Weiwei’s Spider

Biennial

This week sees the launch of Liverpool Biennial 2012 and I’d recommend everyone gets out and about over the next few weeks and sees just what it’s all about.  Looking through the archives I found a couple of shots from the 2009 Biennial that I thought might spark your interest.   For the Liverpool Biennial 2009, Ai Weiwei came up with a giant crystal-studded spider at the centre of a web, made from a kilometre’s worth of steel cabling and LED lighting suspended 18 metres above the ground. After dusk, the effect is of spun silk that glistens with dew, a web expanding from the centre like the sprawl of city lights seen from a night flight.
